Endless choice, and everything at your fingertips
Bangkok is Thailand’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, offering the widest range of lifestyles, schools, restaurants, healthcare, shopping, entertainment and professional opportunities in the country. It can feel enormous at first, but once you find the right neighbourhood, Bangkok becomes a collection of smaller communities, each with its own personality.
For families, Bangkok offers the greatest variety of international schools, bilingual schools and alternative education options. Healthcare is excellent, there are countless extracurricular activities for children, and practically every cuisine imaginable is available. Life moves faster here than in Thailand’s beach towns, but for many people that energy is exactly what makes Bangkok exciting.
Variety, convenience, exceptional schooling options, world-class food, shopping, culture and the energy of a major international city.
With an established international community
Phuket offers one of Thailand’s easiest transitions into island life. You get beaches, warm weather and tropical scenery without having to sacrifice many of the conveniences you may be used to elsewhere. There is a large and well-established international community, along with international schools, private hospitals, shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants and activities for children.
Phuket also has its own international airport, making travel around Thailand and abroad much easier than from some of the country’s smaller coastal destinations. Different areas of the island feel completely different, from lively beach towns to quieter and more residential communities, so families can choose the environment that suits them best.
Beaches, a strong expat community, international schooling, good healthcare, plenty of restaurants and the convenience of island life without feeling isolated.
And a slower rhythm of life
Krabi is for people who want Thailand to feel a little quieter. The province is known for its towering limestone cliffs, turquoise water, islands, jungle landscapes and beautiful beaches. Life moves more slowly here than in Bangkok or Phuket, and the overall atmosphere tends to feel relaxed, outdoorsy and connected to nature.
You will still find international residents, cafés, restaurants, gyms, private healthcare and schooling options, particularly around Krabi Town and the Ao Nang area, but the selection is smaller than in Bangkok or Phuket. Krabi works especially well for families who value outdoor living, nature, beach afternoons and a slower pace.
Spectacular scenery, a slower pace, outdoor family life, smaller communities and access to the sea without the scale and intensity of Phuket.
In northern Thailand
Chiang Mai offers a completely different version of Thailand. Surrounded by mountains and countryside, the city has a strong cultural identity, beautiful temples, creative communities and a slower pace than Bangkok while still providing many of the conveniences international families need.
There is a substantial expat community, a good selection of international and alternative schools, cafés, restaurants, coworking spaces, markets, healthcare and family activities. Outside the city, it is easy to reach waterfalls, farms, mountain villages and national parks, making Chiang Mai especially attractive for families who want culture, nature and a calmer city lifestyle.
Culture, mountains, creativity, good schooling options, a strong international community and a calmer city lifestyle.
With easy access to Bangkok
Pattaya is often known internationally for its nightlife, but there is much more to the area than that reputation suggests. The wider Pattaya and Jomtien area has become home to a large international population, including many families. Residents have access to international schools, private hospitals, major shopping centres, restaurants from around the world, sports facilities, beaches and almost every day-to-day convenience imaginable.
Jomtien and some of the surrounding residential areas tend to offer a calmer lifestyle than central Pattaya while still keeping everything close by. One of Pattaya’s biggest advantages is location: Bangkok is relatively easy to reach, and U-Tapao Airport provides additional travel options.
Convenience, an established international community, coastal living, strong infrastructure and easy access to Bangkok.
With a community feel
Hua Hin has a gentler energy than many of Thailand’s other major destinations. Originally developed as a seaside retreat, it has long attracted people looking for a quieter, more refined coastal lifestyle. You will find beaches, golf courses, night markets, restaurants, cafés, shopping centres, international schools and private healthcare without the intensity of Bangkok or some of Thailand’s busier resort areas.
The international community is well established, but Hua Hin still manages to feel more residential than tourist-driven in many areas. It is especially attractive for families and people who want life to move at a comfortable pace while staying within reach of Bangkok.
Relaxed coastal living, a quieter community, family-friendly amenities, good infrastructure and proximity to Bangkok.
Choosing where to live in Thailand often comes down to far more than choosing your favourite beach. Your children’s schooling, budget, preferred pace of life, healthcare needs, community and transportation can all influence which destination is the right fit. We help you compare your options and narrow Thailand down to the places that truly fit the life you want to create.
